Two suspects in custody after shooting at Augusta Mall in Georgia

Two suspects were taken into custody after a person was shot inside the Augusta Mall in Augusta, Georgia, on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. Shots were fired shortly after 1 p.m., according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, which said there was one victim.

The sheriff's office confirmed two people were in custody and that the Augusta Mall was closed until further notice as investigators gathered evidence. Witnesses at the scene said shoppers performed CPR on the victim until emergency responders arrived. Photos from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence around the mall.

Officials said the shooter was first seen at the American Eagle store and then moved into Bath & Body Works during the incident. Deputies described the incident to WRDW as 'more of a fight' and not an actual mass shooting.

History at the Augusta Mall shows multiple violent episodes in recent years. In July, a man was shot in the upper thigh and right knee following a dispute. In April of this year, a person was injured outside Dillard's; in 2020, a person was killed at the mall; and in 2022 a gun was pulled during a verbal dispute in the food court.

Investigators have not released the victim's name or condition, and no additional information about the suspects' identities or charges was immediately available Tuesday evening. Authorities urged anyone with information about the case to contact the Richmond County Sheriff's Office as they continue to investigate.
