15-year-old charged with murder after Manchester stabbing near church

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder after Mohanad Abdullaahi Goobe, 15, was stabbed to death in a disturbance near a church on Monton Street in Manchester on Monday afternoon. The attack occurred around 4:30 p.m. and Mohanad sustained stab wounds; he died after treatment at the scene and in hospital. The suspect was arrested earlier this week and cannot be named due to legal reporting restrictions. He is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Saturday, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Greater Manchester Police said they identified a potentially linked earlier incident at Whitworth Park about half an hour before the attack. The force has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for review.

Howard Gough, a CPS spokesman, said prosecutors had determined there was sufficient evidence to pursue trial and that it was in the public interest. The CPS said it had worked closely with GMP throughout the investigation.

Mohanad's family issued a tribute, describing him as a loving 15-year-old who was quick to laugh and had many friends; they said his life should be remembered with dignity and not as a statistic linked to knife crime.

Police said they had carried out several warrants as part of the inquiry and that the Major Incident Portal remains open as detectives seek further information from witnesses. A mandatory referral to the IOPC was made in connection with prior contact before Mohanad's death, and investigators will continue to support his family during the process.
