A 25-year-old man was stabbed multiple times and left in critical condition Sunday night on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens, police said. The attack occurred on an elevated portion of the line as the train moved through the 111th Street station in Corona around 11:30 p.m.

Authorities said the two men did not know each other but had exchanged words before the violence erupted. The assailant approached from behind and stabbed the victim in the neck and twice in the back with an unknown sharp object, according to police. The victim was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens Hospital, where officials initially described him as stable, before later updating his condition to critical as of the latest briefing.

The NYPD later released a surveillance image of the suspect, showing a grinning man standing on the train, with a black Champion hoodie pulled up over his head, light-colored pants and black sneakers, police said. Investigators described him as a person of interest whose identity and motive remain under investigation. Police urged anyone with information to come forward to help identify or locate him.

Anyone with information about the stabbing can contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) for English, or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. Tips can also be submitted online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or via X @NYPDTips.

The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing surveillance video from the train cars and surrounding stations as they pursue leads. Officials said the incident is being treated as an isolated attack on a single train car during service on the line, and there is no corroborated information at this time about additional threats. In a city already grappling with public transit safety concerns, investigators emphasized that more information could help identify the suspect and prevent similar incidents in the future.
