32-year-old man killed on Universal Epic Universe rollercoaster in Orlando; investigators seek cause

A 32-year-old man who used a wheelchair died on the Stardust Racers ride at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida, officials said. Kevin Rodriguez Zavala was identified by his family as the victim in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday night. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said the death was caused by blunt-force trauma and they have not determined what caused the trauma. Local media reported that Zavala did not fall from the ride, but sustained injuries while on board.

Stardust Racers, which opened on May 22, 2025, can reach speeds of up to 62 miles per hour and rise as high as 133 feet along a 5,000-foot track. The ride features two coasters that race and cross paths during the ride and is intended to evoke a comet racing through space. Universal Orlando Resort lists warnings that the ride includes sudden and dramatic acceleration, climbing, tilting, inversion and dropping. Guests must be at least 48 inches tall to ride, and warnings may include restrictions for expectant mothers and guests with heart conditions or high blood pressure.

Universal said it is cooperating with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. A park spokesman expressed condolences to Zavala’s family and said the company is fully cooperating with investigators. The attraction remains closed and park officials have not indicated when or if it will reopen.

Zavala’s family posted a message on a GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral costs, describing him as someone who lit up every room and offered thoughtful advice and support. The family said he faced life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

The incident comes as Florida theme parks have reported a range of injuries in the second half of 2025. In April, a 76-year-old woman fell and injured her leg while exiting Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom Park, People reported. In May, an 87-year-old guest with pre-existing conditions lost consciousness after riding Dinosaur at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Just a month later, in June, a 44-year-old man experienced right arm pain while visiting the Liberty Bell attraction.

Stardust Racers is a centerpiece of Epic Universe, Universal's expansion that opened in 2025, and investigators are reviewing safety features as part of the ongoing inquiry.
