Baby dies after ute crashes into parked car on M1 near Smith Street, Gold Coast
Two others injured; Forensic Crash Unit probes crash as northbound lane remains closed near Smith Street

A baby boy has died after a utility ute ploughed into a car parked on the side of a highway on the Gold Coast, authorities said. The crash occurred about 2:50 a.m. Sunday on the M1 at Gaven, near the Smith Street on-ramp.
Police said the parked vehicle, a silver Jeep Cherokee, was on the northbound side when it was struck by a grey Toyota Hilux. The baby was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital, but died shortly after arrival. The Jeep’s driver, a 24-year-old Ormeau Hills woman, was treated at the hospital in a serious condition. The Toyota driver, a 51-year-old Loganlea man, sustained minor injuries.
Forensic Crash Unit investigators are examining what caused the crash. The M1 near the Smith Street ramp has been reduced to a single northbound lane, and traffic delays are expected as officers remain at the scene. Police urged motorists to avoid the area.
