Beloved former nurse killed in suspected murder-suicide in Boambee, NSW, investigators say

A beloved former nurse is believed to be the victim of a murder-suicide in a semirural New South Wales community, where a major homicide investigation is underway after the bodies of a woman and a man were found inside a Boambee home on Friday.

Carolyn Campbell, 61, and a man in his 60s were discovered at the Boambee property about 5:15 p.m. local time. Police say Campbell was killed, and the man who has been described as a family friend who had been visiting the home then took his own life. Officers were alerted after a welfare check requested by a family member. The man had been staying with the couple in the days prior to the incident.

Detective Inspector Peter O'Reilly said investigators are keeping an open mind and have not found evidence that anyone else was involved. He said there is no indication the public is at risk as the inquiry begins and a crime scene has been established with assistance from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

The deaths have rattled the semirural community, where neighbors who knew Campbell describe her as kind and active. Campbell was a former nurse and an avid hiker, and she and her husband had lived in the area for many years. Their adult daughters were photographed recently running a half marathon with their mother, and social media posts expressed pride in her and sorrow for the family as the investigation unfolds.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 as detectives continue to review evidence and gather details to establish a fuller timeline of events.
