Body found in search for missing 17-year-old Catherine; man in custody on suspicion of murder
Police say the recovered body is believed to be Catherine, with a 55-year-old man in custody as the investigation continues.
A body has been found in the search for 17-year-old Catherine, who had been reported missing from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, prompting the arrest of a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder. Officers located the body at an address on Whalley Close at around 9am on Sunday, police said. Despite the best efforts of emergency service workers, Catherine died at the scene. Greater Manchester Police believes the body is Catherine, although formal identification has not yet taken place. Her next of kin have been informed and officers are supporting the family.
The man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Anna Barker said: 'Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young person who has tragically lost their life, who we sadly believe was missing Catherine. Although we have a man in custody, our investigation team is keeping an open mind and are following several lines of enquiry.' A scene will remain in place while officers conduct their investigation.
