Delaware woman, 35, dies in golf cart crash

A 35-year-old Delaware woman died Sunday after falling from a golf cart while riding with a female friend in the Pot-Nets Bayside community, a coastal residential development along Long Neck near Millsboro. Sandy Sokira, of Millsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Venom EV Golf Cart she was in carried her with critical injuries. The cart did not strike another object and sustained no damage. The driver, a 44-year-old woman, was not injured and has not been identified. Delaware state police said the crash is being treated as a fatal crash and that further details have not been released; it was not immediately clear whether criminal charges would follow.

Sokira was remembered by family and friends as a beloved granddaughter, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Her brother, Jonathan Sokira, posted tributes on social media, saying Sandy was full of life and would want others to celebrate her life. He announced that a service would be held on September 28 and noted that Sandy had touched the lives of hundreds of children who called her Aunt. Several friends and neighbors also posted messages of support after the tragedy.

Police released Sokira's name only after notifying her family of the death. The fatal crash occurred around 7 p.m. on September 14 in the Pot-Nets Bayside community in Long Neck. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and that no other injuries were reported. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information is asked to contact Delaware State Police at 302-703-3269, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
