Eight-year-old boy killed in Billingham: mother charged with murder as family pays tribute
Police say Rhys Anthony Cameron died after an incident at a Billingham home; his mother Louise Cameron is in custody awaiting trial.

A devastated family has paid tribute to eight-year-old Rhys Anthony Cameron, who police say died after an incident at a Billingham home earlier this month. Rhys, described as severely autistic and non-verbal, was found unresponsive by a family member on Monday, September 15, with emergency services called at 10 a.m. He is said to have died sometime between September 13 and September 15. His mother, Louise Cameron, 40, was arrested after receiving medical treatment and was charged with murder. She appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, September 19, and was remanded in custody until her next appearance on November 6.
Today Rhys's family issued an emotional tribute to him, saying: 'Rhys was a lovely little son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend to many who loved and knew him in the community. He had a cheery, funny and beautiful personality and carried a huge smile wherever he went that will forever be remembered. His love for listening to music, playing with his friends and toothbrushes brought joy to us all. To say we as a family are devastated is an understatement; Rhys will be missed more than we can ever put into words. We take comfort from the words of support we have received, and the love shown to Rhys as we continue to take time to come to terms with our tragic loss.'
A neighbour near the home said: 'It is just devastating that that sweet little boy has lost his life. The emergency services started arriving at 10am on Monday and they were clearly investigating something serious by the number of police officers who arrived. Rhys was severely autistic and non-verbal, so he had really demanding needs but she absolutely doted on him. It makes this an even bigger shock.'
Rhys was a pupil at Ash Trees Academy in Billingham, and headteacher Lauren Banks told Teesside Live that his smile 'lit up the room'. She said, 'He was a delight to all of us and he was a true pleasure to have as part of our school family. We are thinking of all those who knew and loved him.'
Police have said little beyond confirming the circumstances of Rhys's death and the ongoing investigation. Cameron remains remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing at Teesside Crown Court in November; no additional charges have been announced. The community continues to mourn a young boy described by his family and teachers as having brought joy to those around him.
