Infant killed, brother injured after SUV reverses into pram at Sydney shopping centre
Five-month-old girl dies and five-year-old boy taken to Westmead after crash outside Minto Mall; police treating incident as a tragic accident and investigating

A five-month-old girl died and her five-year-old brother was seriously injured after a sport utility vehicle reversed into a pram outside a takeaway at Minto Mall in Sydney’s south‑west on Monday afternoon, police said.
The collision occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Brookfield Drive outside an El Jannah restaurant, where witnesses and emergency crews worked at the scene. Police and paramedics gave the infant CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the location. The boy was treated at the scene and taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition; authorities later said his condition had improved.
Witnesses described distressing scenes as emergency services responded. A local resident, who arrived after the incident, said police had erected a tent and privacy screens around the children while paramedics worked. Onlookers reported a helicopter at the scene and multiple emergency vehicles. A mangled pram and a white Renault were seen near the cordoned area.
Residents and passersby left floral tributes, stuffed toys and balloons at the site on Tuesday. Several people gathered near the restaurant to pay their respects, and the business briefly closed on Monday while police carried out their inquiries; it had reopened by Tuesday.
Police said they have established a crime scene and opened an investigation into the circumstances of the collision, which they are treating as a tragic accident at this stage. Investigators continue to examine the vehicle movements and speak to witnesses. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Eyewitness accounts circulated on social media as the scene unfolded. One witness described seeing the pram struck as a driver attempted to reverse from a parking space. Another said they saw a mother distressed and receiving support from officers. Police have not released further details about the driver or any immediate charges.
The incident has shaken the local Minto community and prompted an outpouring of sympathy for the family. Local residents returned to the mall the following day to place messages and toys among the tributes. Staff from the nearby restaurant were seen observing the makeshift memorial during breaks.
Traffic and parking areas near the restaurant remained partially cordoned off as investigators completed forensic and scene examinations. Police said those inquiries are ongoing and that public appeals for information will continue as they piece together the sequence of events that led to the child’s death.
Anyone with dash‑cam footage, phone video, or other information related to the incident has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers to assist the investigation. The New South Wales Police Force is handling the matter through its local commands while forensic teams and officers collect evidence at the scene.
