Man fatally shot in London street named by police; murder investigation launched

A man was fatally shot in north-west London on Friday evening, triggering a murder investigation and a police appeal for witnesses. The Metropolitan Police named the victim as Simon Whyte, 55, who died at the scene after officers were called to West End Close in Stonebridge, Brent, at 21:35 GMT.

Detectives from the Met say inquiries are being pursued at pace and that thoughts are with Whyte's family and friends. Patrols will be increased in the area, and officers urged anyone with information to contact the force on 101 or to report anonymously to Crimestoppers. Police officials said a large group was believed to have gathered nearby at the time of the incident and investigators want to speak to them.

No arrests have been made. The murder investigation is being led by detectives from the homicide and major crime command. Authorities said they are reviewing evidence from the scene and surrounding area, including CCTV and witness accounts.

The Metropolitan Police said there are no further details to release at this stage and urged anyone with information that could assist the inquiry to come forward.
