Scottish Labour MSP Choudhury suspended over inappropriate conduct claim

Scottish Labour has suspended Foysol Choudhury, the party’s MSP for Lothian, amid an allegation of inappropriate conduct. Choudhury has represented the constituency in the Scottish Parliament since 2021 and will sit as an independent while the party conducts an investigation under its rules.

The Labour Party said it takes all complaints seriously and that they are fully investigated in line with the party’s rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken. It is understood Choudhury has been administratively suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.

SNP MP Kirsty Blackman said Anas Sarwar must urgently come clean on the reasons why yet another Labour Party MSP has been suspended. Choudhury is Bangladeshi-born and serves as chairman of the Edinburgh and Lothians Regional Equality Council. He was also a founding director and is vice chairman of the Edinburgh Mela, a multicultural festival in the city.

The suspension highlights ongoing questions about discipline and transparency within Labour ranks in Scotland as the party navigates a series of internal investigations. Officials emphasized that the process will be carried out in accordance with established procedures and that the public will be updated as appropriate.
