Skeletal remains found in trash bag by NYC sanitation workers near Idlewild Park

New York City sanitation workers discovered human skeletal remains inside a garbage bag early Monday near Idlewild Park in Queens, authorities said.

The discovery was made at Brookville Boulevard and 149th Avenue in Springfield Gardens, near the perimeter of Idlewild Park and John F. Kennedy International Airport, just before 8 a.m., police said after a 911 call was received.

Officers responded to the scene and EMS personnel confirmed the remains appeared to belong to a woman, authorities said.

Two supervised sanitation workers had loaded the covered remains into the hopper of a sanitation truck before noticing a foul odor and contacting authorities, according to police. The bag appeared to be wrapped in tape and rope, according to a photo obtained by the New York Post.

Investigators with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the identity of the decedent, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Idlewild Park borders the north side of John F. Kennedy International Airport and is home to one of the largest remaining saltwater marshes in Queens.

There have been no immediate public updates on the status of the investigation, and authorities have not identified a suspect or provided a timeline for the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
