Spain launches unlimited transport passes for €60 a month

Spain announced a nationwide public transport pass that would let people travel anywhere in the country by bus or train for a flat €60 a month, with a reduced €30 for those under 26. The government said the pass will come into effect in the second half of January as part of a bid to make mobility cheaper and to encourage greater use of public transport.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the move as a step to 'change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport for ever,' saying it demonstrates the administration's commitment to improving ordinary lives. The pass would cover travel on middle-distance and suburban trains as well as national buses. Officials said the scheme could reduce monthly travel costs for some workers by as much as 60 percent, potentially benefiting about 2 million people.

Spain is not alone in offering unlimited-pass schemes. Germany's Deutschlandticket began in 2023 at €49 per month, rising to €58 in 2025 and set to €63 in 2026, covering regional rail, metro, trams and bus travel. Hungary's pass runs about €49 a month with large discounts for students. Portugal's pass costs about €20 per month but is restricted to Portuguese residents who have a national tax number. Switzerland has the most expensive option, the GA Travelcard, at about €470 per month for adults and €315 for young people, while tourists can opt for the Swiss Travel Pass Flex starting at €315 for three to 15 days of travel within a month.

Officials say the goal is to ease daily life by reducing commuting costs and encouraging public transit use, with the government emphasizing that the plan could alter ordinary travel behavior in the country.
