Sydney police chase across 30 kilometers leaves officer hospitalized
Suspect in stolen Citroen fled after a late-night pursuit; two crime scenes established as investigation continues
A police pursuit spanning roughly 30 kilometers across Sydney left an officer hospitalized after the driver of a suspected stolen Citroen sedan rammed parked cars and attempted to run down officers, authorities said. The pursuit began when highway patrol officers spotted the Citroen on Reservoir Road in Blacktown about 9:15 p.m. on Saturday and the driver refused to stop.
The chase ended about 30 kilometers away on James Street in Leichhardt, in Sydney's inner west. The sedan crashed into two parked cars and rammed three police vehicles before the driver turned around and tried to strike the pursuing officers. One officer opened fire on the vehicle and another discharged a Taser, but the suspect managed to escape on foot.
A 27-year-old police officer sustained a head injury during the confrontation and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The suspected driver remained at large as the investigation continued.
Police later located the abandoned sedan dumped in a driveway on Crystal Street in Petersham. Investigators have established two separate crime scenes at James Street and Crystal Street as they probe the incident.
