Teen dies after falling from Bay Area overpass during illegal sideshow

A 16-year-old boy died after falling from a freeway overpass early Saturday while watching an illegal street sideshow in the San Francisco Bay Area, the California Highway Patrol said.

Jose Cuevas climbed over a concrete barrier about 3:30 a.m. to get a better view of the activity by the on- and off-ramps at the Carquinez Bridge and fell approximately 75 feet, authorities said. The CHP said Monday that the death appears to be accidental and that its investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses and local reports described chaos on the streets during the early-morning event, which drew more than 100 cars that blocked an intersection and performed “donuts” and other illegal maneuvers for spectators. Cuevas, who was reported to have been about a six-hour drive from his home in Harbor City, had been among those gathered to watch.

Local business owner Julia D’Alo told KTVU (Fox 2) that sideshows have been a recurring problem in the area for years and described the community’s concern. "We woke up to just lots and lots of sirens and honking horns... and there was news in the morning that there was a sideshow," she said. "This is something that the town is really, really concerned about. I feel like we're in the Wild Wild West here. Kids: it's not worth it when you lose your life. Please get yourself involved in good things."

The CHP said it is collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of its inquiry into the circumstances of the fall. The agency has not released further details about any enforcement action related to the sideshow itself.

Sideshow events — informal street gatherings in which drivers deliberately perform risky driving maneuvers — have drawn concern from law enforcement and community leaders in multiple regions because of public safety risks to both participants and onlookers. In this case, the fatal fall occurred as spectators gathered on elevated roadside areas to view the activity below.

Officials did not immediately release additional information about Cuevas’s travel to the Bay Area or whether any arrests were made in connection with the event. The CHP asked anyone with information or video of the incident to contact investigators.

The investigation remains active, and the CHP has urged the public to avoid attending illegal street events and to report dangerous driving to local authorities.
