Texas mother blocks carjacker from taking SUV with daughter inside

A Texas mother intervened in a carjacking in San Antonio, stepping in front of her sport-utility vehicle to prevent a thief from driving away with her five-year-old daughter inside the backseat, authorities said.

Lisa Hummer said she was dropping off her twins at a San Antonio daycare when an unidentified suspect hopped into the front passenger seat and attempted to back out with the SUV. Hummer had left her five-year-old daughter, Nova, in the backseat while she escorted Nova's one-year-old siblings into the daycare. She told KSAT that leaving Nova in the car is sometimes routine during drop-offs, but she normally locks the doors.

'It's hard with twins who can't walk yet to take them both out at the same time,' she told KSAT. 'I just ran over there, no hesitation. I just wanted to stand in front of it.' Hummer described yelling at the intruder, telling him multiple times that her child was in the car. 'My kid is in the car!' she said, estimating she shouted the phrase about 10 times. Surveillance footage from the scene showed the car initially backing out of the parking lot before coming to a stop. After hearing Hummer's cries, the thief looked at her and then at the backseat before exiting the vehicle and fleeing.

'I was preparing to be run over, but I didn't care,' she told KSAT. 'I was going to do whatever it took to keep him from taking her.'

The San Antonio Police Department said the incident is under investigation. No injuries were reported, and investigators are reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses. The Daily Mail has reached out to both Hummer and police for comment.

The episode underscores ongoing concerns about safety during daycare drop-offs and the importance of securing vehicles when children are inside. SAPD officials did not release descriptive information about the suspect, and there is no confirmed motive at this time. Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain vigilant and to follow standard safety practices at arrival and departure points. Additionally, local law enforcement agencies are reviewing recent carjacking patterns in the area to determine if this incident is isolated or part of a broader trend.

The incident occurred in the hours after Hummer had dropped her twins at the daycare and was preparing Nova for the next step of the morning routine. Police have not released additional details about potential witnesses or the exact time of the event, but investigators are pursuing leads in the case. Community members are encouraged to contact the SAPD with any information related to the incident.
