Trump Praises Princess Kate as 'So Beautiful' During Windsor Greeting

President Donald Trump told Catherine, the Princess of Wales, that she was "so beautiful" as he and first lady Melania Trump were greeted by the princess and Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday during his second official state visit to the United Kingdom.

Trump approached the royal couple on the grounds of Windsor Castle at the start of the visit and applauded the princess’s appearance, saying, “You’re beautiful, so beautiful,” according to pool photographs of the encounter. The princess, 43, smiled and shook hands while wearing a maroon dress with a matching hat and purse. Prince William stood alongside her in a dark suit.

The Trumps are in the UK at the invitation of King Charles, with further state events scheduled for Thursday. Melania Trump also spoke briefly with the princess during the greeting, and the group posed for official photographs as part of the ceremonial arrival.

The exchange recalled a comment the president made in December after meeting Prince William in Paris, when he described the future king as “a good-looking guy” and said, “He looked really, very handsome last night.” That meeting was described by Trump as a “great talk.”

The Windsor arrival marked the ceremonial opening of the state visit, which will include additional formal events intended to recognize the ties between the United States and the United Kingdom. State visits typically involve a mixture of ceremonial occasions, private discussions and public engagements with senior members of the royal family and government officials.

Pool photographers recorded the greeting and subsequent photo opportunities at Windsor. The White House and Buckingham Palace provided standard coordination for the visit, which follows established protocols for hosting a U.S. president.

The president’s comments about members of the royal family echo past informal remarks he has made during meetings with royals and other foreign leaders. Officials from both sides emphasized the ceremonial aspects of the visit and the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two countries as the central purpose of the trip.
