Two stabbing incidents on New York City subways Saturday punctuated a tense weekend in Midtown Manhattan, as police searched for a suspect described as a light-skinned man wearing gray clothing and a beanie. A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the torso on a southbound 6 train at Grand Central Station around 5 p.m. He was hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, according to police sources.

About an hour later, at 6:11 p.m., a separate attack on the ACE line left a 15-year-old boy with a slash to the arm at the 42nd Street station. The assailant wore a brown jacket and fled the scene as officers arrived, police said.

Police said the two incidents followed a dispute between the suspects and victims prior to the stabbings. The incidents come amid a stretch of subway violence that has drawn increased attention from city and state officials. On Friday, a separate stabbing on the Upper West Side left a 23-year-old man stabbed in the back while waiting for a northbound 1 train at 96th Street and Broadway around 7 p.m.; the knife was recovered on the scene and the victim was listed in stable condition at Mt. Sinai-Morningside Hospital, according to police.

There have now been four knife attacks on NYC subways this month. Gov. Kathy Hochul pledged $77 million to keep NYPD cops in the subway system in 2026 on Thursday, a funding measure she framed as strengthening security for riders and transit workers.

Transit crime has dipped to its lowest level in 16 years, with overall transit crime down about 15% from 2019, officials noted as part of the broader context for the move to bolster patrols and presence in the subway network.

Investigators said they are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting evidence as they search for a suspect described as a light-skinned male with a slim build and, according to one account, wearing gray attire and a beanie. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday evening.
