Two teens die in Gold Coast e-bike crash as Good Samaritan parents witness son’s death

Two Good Samaritan parents were asked to check on a friend’s teenage son after an e-bike crash on the Gold Coast, but they arrived to witness the death of their own son.

Jason and Gillian Gagg were called by friend Kylie Meyers around 4 p.m. Monday to check on her son, Jydon Meyers, 17, who had been involved in a crash at the intersection of Tallebudgera Creek Road and Fenton Drive in Tallebudgera, in the Gold Coast’s south. When they arrived at the scene, the couple saw a blue tarpaulin and realized their other child, Hudson Gagg, 17, was also involved. Hudson died at the scene as first responders worked at the roadway.

The Gaggs later provided a clarification that has affected how the incident has been reported. While initial accounts described Jydon as the rider, the family said Jydon was the pillion passenger on an e-bike that had two seats. The two teens were riding together when they collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander.

Jydon Meyers was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with leg and facial injuries, described as serious but stable. The driver of the Outlander, a 65-year-old man from Robina, was treated at hospital for shock and emotional distress. Police said the road was blocked as emergency crews attended the scene.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage to contact police on 131 444. Investigators are reviewing the sequence of events leading up to the collision, including the e-bike’s two-seat configuration and the actions of all parties involved.

The families issued a joint message of sorrow for the elderly driver, expressing hope that he would find strength in the days ahead. In a separate effort to support the families, Meyers set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the financial burden associated with the tragedy and Jydon’s recovery. The message from the families noted the boys had grown up together and shared a deep bond, describing their day as “a day filled with adventure” before the crash.

Tributes began to accumulate at the scene, where flowers were laid near a wooden post along the roadway. Local residents and friends posted condolences online, reflecting on Hudson’s memory and the pain of losing a friend so suddenly. The two families and their broader circle continue to cope with the emotional impact while trying to support Jydon through his rehabilitation.

The incident has drawn attention to the dangers associated with e-bikes and shared-use paths in coastal communities, prompting renewed calls for safety awareness and, in some circles, discussions about helmet use, rider limits, and vehicle interactions in congested or residential areas. Authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and urged caution against drawing conclusions before all facts are established.

In the coming days, authorities are expected to release additional details as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available. The community’s sympathies are with the families as they navigate the profound loss and the long road to recovery for Jydon.
